They got a pepper bar!

I must confess. I am totally bewildered, compelled, and hypnotized by Quizno's latest ad campaign. If you've seen it, you know exactly what I mean--the creatures are called "spongmonkeys," and they're the work of a fellow named Joel Veitch. If you haven't seen the commercial, here's the song upon which it's based.

According to Seth Stevenson over at Slate,

Many of you are repulsed by the spongmonkeys, can't fathom how they would make you desire a sub, and worry that these ratlike creatures suggest an unsanitary sandwich-prep environment.

I fear that I'm exposing some horrible secret about myself when I say that this song is so bad, the spongmonkeys so repugnant, and the ad itself so absurd, that I find myself unable to tear myself from the screen when it comes on, and utterly powerless to get the stupid thing out of my head. It's so bad, and so perfectly bad, that I can't help it.

They remind me of Weebl and Bob. And, I too, must confess...I'm captivated by them.

I was really freaked out when I saw on a sandwich commercial the freakish furry things I remembered vaguely from some disturbing website out there somewhere.

I feel the same--these "spongmonkeys" are so ghastly I can barely take my eyes off them.

I love the spongemonkeys, and ever so casually, my wife and son and I have all been watching the strip malls we drive by in daily life looking for a Quiznos. I want to eat one of those subs just to reward them for that freaky-ass ad.
