Monk

It's usually easier for me to nitpick at shows/movies that I don't like than it is to come up with something particularly original to say about the ones that I like. But, to my delight this evening, I discovered that perhaps my single favorite show on television begain its new season tonight.

If you're not watching Monk on the USA Network, you're one of two kinds of people: either you don't have cable, or you need to start. Tony Shalhoub won a Golden Globe and an Emmy for best actor in a comedy series last year for this show, and both he and Bitty Schram were nominated for GGs this year (as well as the show itself). The show is cleverly written, and combines intricate mystery plots with really smart characters. The only thing wrong with it is that its first two seasons were only 12 (I think) episodes apiece, and for some inexplicable reason, ABC has only used it thus far as filler for down time slots, rather than throwing some serious promotion behind it.

For my money, it's the best show on television not appearing on HBO. And it cheered me up to learn that the 3rd season started today...
