Meteorophily

Well, we finally caught ourselves a weather break here in central NY, and by "break," I mean temperatures in the positives. It got into the 20s today, and was actually possible to go outside and feel somewhat human. Rapidly climbing the charts of my least favorite words is the (literally and figuratively) chilling phrase "record lows."

Of course, the relative safety of the roads did my car-less, house-bound self very little good in the grand scheme of things. And so I read. Finished up Nick Sagan's Idlewild today--pretty light fare, although entertaining enough. I regret buying it in hardcover, but I'm largely powerless in the face of a stylish book cover, I fear. That, and I like the word "Idlewild." Seems to me that maybe I owned an album by that name in the late 80s.

Speaking of reading, this little article (although a month old now) came across MetaFilter today, and I had myself a chuckle over it. Kieran Healy at Crooked Timber reflects upon the "Books I Did Not Read This Year." A sample:

6. Game Theory Evolving by Herbert Gintis. A comprehensive and elegantly presented introduction to game theory that takes a problem-centered approach requiring only basic calculus — “This book is perfect for upper undergraduate and graduate economics courses,” says the publisher, “as well as a terrific introduction for ambitious do-it-yourselfers throughout the behavioral sciences.” Its place on this list is therefore assured for the indefinite future.
